Intro to Sailing 100
This course is an introduction to sailing for young children (ages 7+) who are neither familiar with sailboats nor ready to sail solo. Instruction will be given using the club's 420 sailboats. Instructors will be in boats with students. The students will be taught fundamental conepts and terminology of sailing while giving them the opportunity to gain confidence and foster an appreciation for sailing in a controlled environment. There is a swimming requirement for this course, so please contact the office with anny concerns..


Intro to Sailing 100 meets Monday – Friday 9 AM – 4PM

Beginning Sailing 101
This class is for students 7 years old and up who want to learn the art of sailing. The Optimist will be the primary boat used for instruction. Lessons will include : how to rig and de-rig, boat launching, returning to shore, how to tack, jibe, trim the sail, steer, and recover from capsizing. Students will learn how to tie knots, and to recognize tide and weather conditions.

Beginning Sailing 101 meets Monday – Friday 9 AM – 4PM

Intermediate Sailing 103
This course is available to those students who have completed Advanced Beginning Sailing 102 or have achieved an equivalent level of sailing expertise. Lessons are structured for those students who have mastered the fundamentals of sailing. Intermediate Sailing 103 builds upon the skills taught in Beginning Sailing 101 and Advanced Beginning 102. Students will learn right-of-way rules and basic sailboat racing. Regardless of whether students decide to continue along a competitive track, the racing instruction is fun for the students and gives them extra confidence in the skills they have learned. Optimist is the primary boat used for instruction.

Intro to Race Team 201
Introduction to Race Team is offered to those children ages 8 years old and up who wish to:

  • Move from Opti Green Fleet to more advanced Opti Fleets
  • Sailors who have a new boat or who wish to move to different fleet.
  • Gain more experience and practice prior to beginning of  Race Team practice
  • Any one wanting to try sailing competitively   

Applicants should have completed Intermediate Sailing 103 or attained an equivalent level of sailing proficiency. The course will provide students with beginning concepts of racing, rules of racing and boat handling.

Course meets Monday through Friday 4:30 to 7:00 pm

Cost:$250/$300 (non-members)

Race Team
Practices and out of town regattas are mandatory for race team members. Practice is conducted Monday - Thursday. For parents and race team members there will be a mandatory Race Team Orientation meeting to be announced soon. This meeting will be held in the club main ball room. Topics include; participation expectations and responsibilities, discipline, time commitment, practice calendar, out of town regattas, travel logistics and costs, and club sponsored racing.

On Friday, August 1 there will be a racing clinic conducted for Opti, Sunfish and Laser sailors. The clinic will start at 9 am and conclude at 4 pm. Each class will admit 10 students only and course tuition is $75.00.

Course meets Monday through Thursday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Race Camp
Race Camp will introduce youth sailors to small boat racing with the purpose of offering a late season opportunity for youth sailors to join the CYC race team. Eligible students will be evaluated on their sailing knowledge, boat handling and competitiveness. Qualifying students will be invited to join the CYC Youth Race Team for the duration of the season which runs to August 8.

Race Camp meets Monday through Thursday from 9 am - NOON.
Cost: FREE (Only open to individuals who have completed Intermediate Sailing 103)

Funweek
The recommended age for Fun Week is 7 -12. Fun Week is highlighted with adventurous sailing expeditions to Masonboro Island, The Cliffs, the Swimming Hole and Bird Island. Other activities may include; greased watermelon contest, scavenger hunts, picnic and tie died shirt making. Parents are requested to provide young sailors with a packed lunch and container of water for each class day.

In the event of inclement weather class will be conducted in the club’s main ballroom. Movies, board games and other classroom type activities will be supervised by Sailing Instructors.

Funweek meets Monday – Thursday 9 AM – 3PM
Cost: $260/$310 (non-members)

Advanced Beginning Sailing 102: This course builds upon the boat handling skills learned by students in Beginning Sailing 101 and who are 8 years old and up. Students will be taught the finer points of sail management, tiller control and points of sail. Students will have an opportunity to sail solo, satisfactorily sail to a mark and return to shore. The Optimist is the primary boat used for instruction.

Advanced Beginning Sailing 102 Monday – Friday 9 AM – 4PM.

Advanced Intermediate Sailing 104: This course will focus on improving a student’s sailing expertise in preparation for their participation in a racing environment, whether they wish to join the CYC race team or participate in the club sponsored Wednesday evening Youth Fun Sail and Summer Series. Students enrolling in this course will have completed Intermediate Sailing 103 or be able to demonstrate an equivalent sailing capability.

Advanced Intermediate Sailing 104 meets Monday – Friday 9 AM – 4PM.

Intro to 420: This course is for older and larger sailors who are new to sailing, or younger sailors with some experience but who are new to the 420.  Our course will include the basics of rigging a 420, basic boat handling, seamanship, sportsmanship, and water safety.
