2008 Carolina Yacht Club Junior Sailing Schedule
The 2008 CYC Sailing Program shall promote sailing as a fun, social and self-enriching sport in both the competitive and recreational areas in a safe manner. Ultimately, the goal is for students to acquire sailing skills that enhance their self-confidence, self-responsibility, seamanship skills, sailing knowledge, and Corinthian Spirit.

Every effort has been made to offer a syllabus of sailing courses that meets the needs of the membership and trends in sailing; however, if we are not offering a course that you desire, please contact the Office, at 256-3396. If there is sufficient demand, four or more students, we will make every effort to provide your desired course.

Beginning Sailing
Morning Classes are more suitable for beginning sailing due to less wind and are structured for children 8-11 years old or for those that have little sailing experience. The Optimist will be the primary boat used to familiarize children how to: rig, de-rig, launch, return to shore, tack, jibe, trim the sail, steer, and recover from a capsize. Additional topics that will be addressed are how to tie various knots and how to recognize weather conditions. Upon completion, students should feel confident in sailing on all points of sail.
Beginning Sailing meets Monday – Thursday 9AM – 12PM
Cost:$275/$350 (non-members)

Intermediate Sailing
Afternoon classes will be designated for intermediate classes due to the increase in sea breeze. These classes are structured for children 11 and older or those that have already mastered the fundamentals of sailing. Afternoon students will further develop skills taught in the morning class and will be given introductions to right-of-way rules and basic sailboat racing. Regardless of whether students decide to continue along a competitive track, the racing instruction is fun for the students and gives them extra confidence in the skills they have learned. Optimists will be the primary boat used for instruction. If ready, with instructor‘s discretion students will be given the opportunity to move up to Lasers.
Intermediate Sailing meets Monday-Thursday 1PM – 4PM
Cost:$275/$350 (non-members)

This course is an introduction to sailing for young children (ages 8+) who are neither familiar with sailboats nor ready to sail solo. Instructors will use 420’s to familiarize the children with fundamental concepts and terminology of sailing while giving them the opportunity to gain confidence on the water through a more controlled environment. There is a swimming requirement for this course, so please contact the Sailing Director, with any concerns.

Sailing Assistants
Students enrolled in the CYC Sailing Program and who have shown dedication to the sport of sailing are eligible to become Jr. Sailing Assistants. These students make a valuable contribution to the program by assisting instructors and dockmasters in their daily tasks. In return, the assistants gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become dockmasters and instructors once they get older. The selection of Sailing Assistants is limited, so those interested should contact the Sailing Director at 256-3396, ext. 18.

Funsail
As is becoming tradition at the CYC, Thursday evenings will once again
be reserved for Funsail beginning at 6pm. Sailors of all ages and levels
are invited to race any boat of their choosing under the requisite that
they have fun in doing so. This is a family event, so bring everyone,
even if they just want to watch, and eat a late dinner on the Oceanside
of the Club.
